Embracing Irish Life: My First Four Weeks as an Exchange Student in Dublin

Four weeks in Ireland offer a blend of new experiences—from navigating a different school system to enjoying scenic beach walks. The relaxed, welcoming atmosphere makes it an ideal place to explore and learn.

Irish Highschools

My name is Mathilde, I’m 16 and I come from Germany. I currently live in Baldoyle and go to St.Mary’s secondary school there. My Irish school is very different from my school in Germany, so it’s really interesting comparing both systems. I really like that we only take 8 subjects here and four of them can be chosen by the individual student. And even though it’s quite different from what I’m used to, having longer school days is not as bad as I imagined. It’s a good thing though that school starts at 8:45 so you’re not falling asleep during the first lesson.

Friends in Ireland

People and trips in Ireland

Most people that I meet are very nice and it’s fairly easy getting around as someone will always help you. Irish people usually seem to be very relaxed, even bus drivers and teachers (haha). But it makes one really feel welcome and that’s what counts! On the weekends I like to meet with my friends (sadly no Irish people yet), and we go to a park or go shopping in Dublin, but we also went to a fair in Howth two weeks ago. We also went to the beach and stood in the sea, but it was way too cold. I enjoy going for a walk in Seagrange Park or at the beach in the evening. It’s great to relax and calm down. Sunsets at the beach are just priceless! I hope to learn more about Ireland and get to know my hometown here in the next months.
