The School Curriculum

Irish secondary education is organised into Junior Cycle, Transition Year and Senior Cycle. The exact year placement and subjects available to an international student depend on the individual school and its acceptance of the application.

Junior Cycle covers Years 1 to 3 and is typically attended by students aged approximately 12 to 15. Students study a broad curriculum and may take up to nine subjects. English and Mathematics form part of the core programme for overseas students, with additional subjects depending on the school.

Transition Year is Year 4 and is typically suited to students aged approximately 15 to 16. It is less exam-focused than other school years and usually provides broader subject exposure, practical activities and work-experience opportunities. This can make it particularly suitable for international students.

Senior Cycle covers Years 5 and 6 and leads to the Leaving Certificate. Overseas students normally take at least six subjects, including English and Mathematics. Additional subjects depend on the school timetable and availability.
